Review: Puchong Mess Banana Leaf Rice in Bandar Puteri Puchong

Hi lovelies! ❤️

Today I’m going to write a review of one of my favourite Malaysian dishes that I could eat almost every week without getting sick and bored of it, which is *drum rolls*, the ever-versatile banana leaf rice (BLR)! 🤣 I used to eat BLR almost every Friday with my colleagues to lighten everyone’s mood as a treat and to celebrate the end of yet another working week. 🤗

I went twice to this place in Puchong called Puchong Mess that serves banana leaf rice but only on WEEKDAYS (opens Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 3pm). Once on Monday and another time on Friday.

The curry kuah differs on each day, I asked the uncle on their curry kuah schedule and he told me that they serve 🐐 mutton curry kuah on Monday and Wednesday, 🐔 chicken curry kuah on Tuesday and Thursday, and 🦀 crab curry kuah on Friday.

The restaurant is located in a dodgy part of Bandar Puteri Puchong nearby Columbia Asia Hospital. The restaurant is at the first floor of Chakra Catering Services, but you can still Waze and get here by “Puchong Mess“. You’ll have to take off your shoes and set them aside by the stairs before entering.

The setting of the restaurant is pretty unique, it almost looks like it was originally a tuition centre before they transformed it into a restaurant. The seats are like tuition tables and chairs, and you’re to be seated side by side and the anneh will serve the food in front of you. Quite a smart and convenient I would say!

BLR dishes on Monday + mutton kuah. There are 4 types of vege/fruit. Not a fan of mutton so I opt to eat it with 🐟 salted fish kuah. It was quite an unique kuah as I’ve not come across this kuah in other BLR places before.

This is the spread on Friday. Way more elaborate with 7 types of vege/fruit + cauliflower soup + 🦀 crab kuah which includes a fried potato ball (not sure what it’s called??). I put high hopes on the crab kuah but sadly it was too bland to my liking, could use some salt. I think the chef forgotten to season it that time 😅 The kuah is spicy and thick though 👍🏻

My favourite chicken varuval! My go-to meat dish to order at every BLR!

We ordered two meat dishes to eat with our banana leaf rice (RM8). Meat and seafood side dishes range around RM6 – RM8. We ordered chicken varuval (RM6) and curry squid (RM7). The flavours are wholesome and well-seasoned. 🤤 The dishes are fresh as well and some are prepared upon request!

Each dish is portioned for one person and it’s quite inexpensive compared to Bangsar banana leaf restaurants! Unlike in Devi’s Corner where one plate of meat (ranging from RM12 – RM15) can feed two persons and hence obviously it would be double the price of a single portion. It always tend to over-order at there cause I want two types of meat but it can actually feed 2-3 pax and the bill goes up to RM25 per pax 😅

Service was superb, the staffs were very attentive (despite the crowd) and did rounds to ask if we wanted refills and filled our water too.

Happy tummy ❤️

The price list of dishes ranging from RM6 – RM8!

The average for a pax is RM14 – RM18! I normally pair my banana leaf with two or three meat dishes to share! 😍👍🏻

Will definitely recommend this place to friends and family for its great taste and affordable pricing! 🤗

Xoxo 💋
