Review: Merchant’s Lane at Petaling Street

Hello lovelies!

I’ve recently visited Merchant’s Lane after reading up a lot of their reviews and friend’s recommendations of the place. Finally I had time to try their food after finishing my last paper with my course mates!

The location is pretty strategic, in central KL, and yet not too nestled in the Petaling Street area. I had no trouble finding the cafe and parking around. It is located beside ATC College and on top of a stationery store. There is an open parking spot opposite it, which charges by hour. First two hours for RM3, consecutive hour is another RM2.

And kudos to their interior designer! I really love the atmosphere there! It has a touch of nostalgic coupled with its modern tiffany blue shelves and pink counter to bring a refreshing look to the cafe. Two of my favourite colours! This place is definitely every blogger and Instagrammer’s dream cafe to snap pictures and #OOTD shots under the bright sun. Plenty of sunlight to take clear shots!

Greeted with cold air the moment we entered. That was unexpected :p I half-expected the place to be hot because from the pictures I’ve seen online, their pictures look like there were taken under the scorching hot sun.

Al-fresco area for smokers or people who want to take pretty OOTD shots against their grudge-styled walls 😀 It’s very hot outside thou.

Temple-like circle incense and rattan chairs at the other section behind the al-fresco zone. This section is air-conditioned. Where can I get that pretty flowers painting?

Meals for 4 pax!
Left to right: Italian chow mein, followed by two South China Sea, rose honey milk, rose tea, Eat Die Me and hot chocolate.

Italian chow mein (RM23) is a tad too spicy for our liking. It is like a fusion of dry curry mee and aglio olio.

South China Sea (RM24) grilled salmon were a bit fishy, but then it varies to the salmon for that particular day. My friends ordered two. One was fishy, the other was okay. The eggs were bland too, wished there was more seasoning on it.

Eat Die Me (RM26) was my favourite, and it was my meal! I love the combination of everything on that plate. I especially enjoyed the bread and mushrooms. THE BREAD, oh god..it was not the regular hard cardboard toast. The bread was a little sourish, but very soft and fresh. It’s sourdough bread if I’m not mistaken. Mushrooms were a combination of different types of wild mushrooms. The potatoes (shredded) a little oily, but I love potatoes in any form, so it was still acceptable. Scrambled eggs and sausages are okay 🙂
There are selections for types of sausage meat and how eggs preferred to be served.

Rose honey milk (RM12) looks pretty in pictures, but the milk taste like regular milk. However, I do like the aromatic scent you get when you take a whiff of the roses in the cup. I can only smell the roses when I’m drinking the milk thou. And my bad, cause I don’t normally like drinking milk, I only drink chocolate and strawberry milk :p

Eat Die Me at RM26 and rose honey milk RM 12.
The meal looks so Instagramable _

My friends posing for new pictures to tag #OOTD on Instagram! :p

The girls taught me how to stand and pattern pattern for the camera. I still suck at it hahaha

Overall, I found the food unique, tastes OKAY, but with the Western-Eastern fusion going on, it’s a nightmare for picky-eaters (like me). I guess I will stick to the same meal the next time I visit! There is still much improvement to be made, but for now, it’s coping up pretty well for a new cafe. This is also my new favourite place for big breakfast! 😀

Do drop by Merchant’s Lane soon!

Review: Yellow Brick Road at Damansara Heights

Hey lovelies!

I guess this is my first time writing a food review just hours after trying it out. I wrote plenty of reviews but mostly were written a few weeks later. I’d better write it while the taste and opinions are still fresh in my mind! This time, we paid a visit to the newly opened cafe spot in town, Yellow Brick Road! It’s located in Damansara area, but I’m not familiar with that area so we had to rely on my trusty Simon the Waze to get there.

We watched Avengers before heading for a late lunch and teatime at YBR. There’s a pancake place by YBR upstairs, but the opening date is yet to be confirmed. I asked the waiter and he said that it is expected to be opened next week.

Read on for my complete food review! Images taken by my Canon 550D with EFS 18-135mm 🙂
Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored/paid review.

Yellow Brick Road, located at Taman Batai. YBR adopts a clean, contemporary design.
Plenty of seats outside too if you’d prefer. It was scorching hot outside :p

Spacious interior, it’s not like Antipodean where you’d be seated very close to the other table.

Truffle fries, RM 16.
Topped with cheese shavings, and served with cheese sauce. Huge portion, pretty crispy.

Verdict: Very large portion, pretty crispy. We found it a little too salty to our liking. Was it supposed to be that salty? I’d prefer it to be lightly salted of course. We had to poke few holes in the bottom of the oil paper to shake off the salt! Lol

Long black and hot mocha. Around RM 10 – RM13.
Apparently, Adrienne found out that the first Malaysian barista to compete in the World Barista Championship was present in the shop at that time! Not sure if our coffee was prepared by him thou.

Verdict: Regardless of it, I enjoyed the hot mocha. Some cafes prepare a higher ratio of chocolate than coffee in the mocha, but I feel that this one has a stronger coffee taste ♥ Haha then again, I’m only a ‘social’ coffee drinker, not a frequent drinker so I might not be able to tell the difference between a good coffee and excellent coffee.

How are we ever going finish it, girls?
Haha we couldn’t finish it anyway, it got really salty at the end…

♥♥♥

Big breakfast, RM30.
No kidding when they said it’s big breakfast. We shared it among us four, almost couldn’t stomach it all too!

Verdict: Big breakfast consisted of beef/bacon ham, chicken/beef sausages, scrambled/poached/fried egg, grilled cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, hash brown and baked beans. I loved the baked beans because it wasn’t those canned type, it was actual baked beans made from scratch. Scrambled eggs has the perfect consistency and softness that I like, and the taste is not too bland. No complains on this 🙂

Cheesy Mr. Mac, RM18.

Verdict: Portion isn’t huge, but I guess the fillingness of heavy cream cheese makes up for the medium portion. A few bites and you’ll feel full already. It tastes rather milky than the usual Mac n Cheese available in other restaurants. I love cheese, so it’s fine with me. It reminded me of Chesedale milk cheddar slices 😀

It was more empty and quiet by 5pm, just an hour before closing 🙂
Location:

Yellow Brick Road, Jalan Batai, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur.
Opening hours:

Daily 9am to 6pm (as of now, subject to changes). Follow them @yellowbrickroadcafe on Instagram.
The only thing I didn’t like was the parking rates at that area! You have no choice but the enter the parking in order to go to YBR, we sat for more than 2 hours and the parking ticket costs us RM6.50. A little too pricey for outdoor parking, and besides there weren’t many tenants at that shop lot yet.
Our bill came up to RM122 (including 10% service charge) with three dishes and four coffee drinks.
Overall, I love the interior design, ambience and attentive service by the staffs. They’ve incorporated a lot of wood in their interior and I have a weak spot for wood and earthy coloured furnitures hehe.. Would like to revisit here, probably will try their Impasta (previously named char siew pasta) and Balik Kampung (Percik chicken with turmeric rice). I would like to come again on a weekend, but this place seems to be the current hype amongst cafe hoppers, so might not be able to secure a good seat on weekends. We went on a weekday at teatime, so there were seats to choose from 🙂

Tous Les Jours

Hey lovelies!

As promised, another post in a week time! Was in a mood to update my blog :p
It’ll be such a waste not to share these pretty #foodporn pictures! ^_^

Tous Les Jours food is ok, but the price is a little pricey considering the portion is quite small :p

“How about we get each of everything?”
